Thanks to Scandinavia celebrates Denmark
|
In 2003 Thanks to Scandinavia celebrates the 60th anniversary of one of Denmark's most fantastic historical events and really one of the world's most defining moments. In 1943, the Nazis, who had occupied Denmark, planned to deport and murder the entire Jewish population of Denmark. A leak from within the nazi leadership revealed the plan. In only a few days the Danish population hid and then smuggled almost 8,000 Jews to safety in Sweden. The Danish people risked their lives and resisted the nazi occupiers.
To preserve the memory of this event, Thanks to Scandinavia was founded by Victor Borge and New York attorney Richard Netter in 1963.

Thanks to Scandinavia, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2003, has participated in the Rebild Celebrations for many years. "The Rebild Celebrations are the place at which we can reach out to a new generation of Danes who might not know about the special story about Denmark and the Jews, even though they, in the spirit their parents and grandparents continue to maintain ties with the United States," said Richard Netter, president of Thanks To Scandinavia.
Over the following 40 years Thanks To Scandinavia has awarded more than 3,000 scholarships to Scandinavian students and teachers for studies in the US and Israel in gratitude for the past and as a contribution towards the strengthening of our friendship for the future. "Instead of building a monument, we honor the Scandinavian people by providing scholarships to future generations" Victor Borge once said.
In memory of Sanna and Victor Borge, Thanks To Scandinavia is proud to award scholarships at the Rebild Celebrations each year to students.
